rubbersouled dresses for non-feminine edgy girls

ASOS Summer 2017 Lust List

Ahh, summer. Most people’s favourite season that I cannot even fathom. This is probably due to the fact that I grew up in a tropical country where it’s 30 degrees celcius 24/7, 365 days a year. That also means that I am not necessarily ‘used to’ / always exposed to heat, because we have air conditioners everywhere we go. But folks, the average person in England does not have that luxury. So I am not used to it, at all! On top of that, I always go home every summer, so I don’t actually have that much exciting summer clothing in my London flat.

This could only mean one thing: getting sucked into the abyss that is ASOS. Which I’m sure you can all relate.

Now I don’t got that much money in my account, so I can’t even afford half of what I want. I was so excited to have these clothes so I can post more looks on my blog and other social media, but nah. It’s just not realistic when you live in London and want to eat a bowl of crispy duck ramen every single week. So I thought I would share with you some of my top picks on ASOS to give my wardrobe a bit of a Summer update. Many of them are on sale as well, so prepare your wallets!!

Dresses

rubbersouled dresses for non-feminine edgy girls

If you watched my video on How to Dress for British Springtime, you will notice that I am suddenly really into dresses. I really cannot be bothered to make an effort to look stylish in summer because it’s too hot for stylish clothing!! But dresses solve this problem!

For the longest time, I wasn’t a fan of dresses at all because I think they are too girly for me. That’s why the dresses that I picked are for you girls out there that may have a slightly edgier style.

The first one is a bit of an edgy dress, I love the mix of prints and the different cuts, which definitely degrades the femininity of a dress. I am also very into smock dresses because it just gives off a playful vibe, and the pattern combined with the colours make it pretty different for a dress. The next one is probably one of the girliest but I love it because it has that ruffle flower detail on top. The gingham doesn’t stop there with this cute spin on an off the shoulder dress. And last but not least is this completely transparent pink dress that I think just looks so cool and grungy, I’m in awe. I’m so sorry though but this one is sold out 😦

Tops

tops.jpg

I gotta say this section isn’t as exciting as the dresses part but I’m not usually too into summer tops for some reason. I’ve tried to find cute ones that I think I would like to wear throughout the years but I do struggle.

I am not too sure I would get a lot of wear out of the first one but I like how it’s one shoulder (instead of completely off-the-shoulder) and connected by a choker detail on the neck. I am sure each one of you have seen the second one though because so many vloggers have mentioned it recently, so it was sold out for a while. But now it’s back in stock!! Lastly, this red top is SO simple, I know. But I do want something simple that I can chuck on every week and not get too bored of it. You know what I mean?

Bottoms: Jeans and Footwear

asos summer picks footwear.jpg

I’ve been on the hunt for a light wash, straight-leg jeans that needs to be cropped at the most perfect place. But I think a light wash is just perfect for the bright summer months. If you are after something a little bit more different than a classic pair of jeans, I am obsessed with these dusky pink ones. Footwear-wise, I am lusting over this black and white rope sandals. I am very much into chunky footwear and I still translate that in summer. Though ropes can theoretically look more summery and feminine, the colour as well as the platform just transforms the sandals to be more… cutting edge lol. Now, the last one isn’t an ugly pair of flat shoes, they are actually SOCKS! How cool are they?! I can imagine myself wearing them with some doc martens, or if flat shoes are your thing then by all means go for it! It’s just more versatile than buying a straight up lacey/ribbony ballerina shoes that are everywhere nowadays.

I really hope you enjoy my picks, I actually really enjoyed writing this post!

Let me know which ones you are planning to dump into your basket or lust over with me!

We all have those days where we just don’t know what to wear (well, for me, this is most days of my life). This was an example of one of those many days. In this particular outfit, I seem to have combined ALL of the most basic of pieces that I pick up every single week. Wear them altogether, et voila, the solution to all your worries! You get the easiest, most effortless outfit.

Band t-shirt

I always gravitate towards my band t-shirts when this happens. And to be completely honest, also when I want to be comfortable or when I want to look cool… or all three! A band tee, to me, is just the stone that kills the two birds. Or in this case, three.

I love this Bowie t-shirt that my boyfriend spotted in Manchester.

(Ripped) Jeans

Throw on a pair of ripped jeans, and you are literally sorted. I have been obsessed with these ones from H&M that I picked up a couple of months ago. Describing these jeans actually sound like the perfect jeans to me – cropped, relaxed, straight-leg fit with (uniquely shaped) rips. If I am completely honest, I do wish it’s like a couple of cm’s shorter. But I think that’s my unrealistic-taste-in-trousers’ fault. I always want everything cropped but I don’t quite have the height for it.

Leather Jacket

With this sort of rock and roll-ish outfit, doesn’t it just make the most perfect sense to pair it with a leather jacket? I chose this particular, more long-line leather jacket because I tried to match the length to the t-shirt. It just adds a hint of interest to an outfit.

Converse

If I could give an award for a pair of shoes, I would give it to the classic, high top chucks. If I could marry a pair of shoes, I would marry the classic, high top chucks. The actual simplest pair of shoes that can magically transform an outfit, in a way.

I’ve been in love with these 70s style ones, though. It has a thicker sole and overall just so much more comfortable than the usual??! Magic.

The idea of visiting Camden was the inspiration behind this outfit. People in Camden are always so cool, individual, and usually that little bit more punky and hipster-y, dare I say. I’m honestly so bad at describing fashion styles. I know this outfit might seem a little different for me, but the thing is, this really is just another side of my style. I used to be much more daring with my style, and boots. Boots, boots, and boots. So honestly this outfit is a little bit of a throwback to me to how I used to dress up when I just moved to London.

And you know what?

I felt so good in this outfit. I haven’t felt this way with the outfit that I am wearing in a bloody while. I felt really cool, confident, a bit not myself, but also SO myself. It’s really weird. It’s probably because I have gone through a pretty ‘dramatic’ change in my style, as I consider myself to be more monochromatic now and a little bit more classic and chic. So dressing like this, felt different to me when it actually really isn’t!

So I was thinking – maybe I should dress this ‘style’ more often, because I felt so me. But it’s gonna be pretty hard because my outfits are not all so Urban Outfitters-y like this.

And then it hit me. (Again) you know what?

WHO CARES!

I can dress however the hell I want, and there is no need to conform to a certain look for the rest of your freaking life! I have a hybrid of all different styles, and that’s okay. That’s what makes you… you.

I guess in the world of social media, it’s pretty hard to find your own style, because you get so inspired every single day with thousands and thousands of people’s outfits. And I have to admit I have been a bit caught and stuck in that bubble. I always considered myself as that girl who “doesn’t care about trends”. But because I’ve been deeply immersed to fashion and social media, I am kind of getting caught in trends.

For the past year, I’ve been trying to stick to a certain look – which I don’t even know what kind of look it is. But now I am trying to be a bit more relaxed about it and just basically wear whatever the hell it is I feel like wearing, even if it’s different to what I usually wear.

Enough with all this preaching and self-assuring sentences. Honestly, I don’t even know what I’m saying. I guess this is more of a note-to-self kind of post. I’m probably not even going to listen to myself and do what I usually do again. But that’s just human nature, right?

The main takeaway here is to wear whatever it is that you want to wear. You do not need to always be consistent with your ‘look’. As long as you feel great and feel like yourself.

21st birthday.

June 14th, 1995, the girl on the picture above was born. Therefore her 21st birthday would be in 2016. But wait, isn’t this February… 2017?!? I mean come on. This is me we’re talking about here. Are you telling me that this is a surprise? Haha

Jokes aside… Let me tell you about my outfit, first of all.

– the outfit –

4 2 3

Dungarees probably sit on the very bottom of the list for normal people’s potential birthday outfits. However, I think the outfit still works to be quite special and smart because it is all black. Especially with the bardot top; it elevates the dungarees and turns the outfit to a different level of edge but also adds a touch of femininity. To add to the girlyness, I paired this outfit with these open-toe-espadrille-esque sandals from Topshop and my trusty Chanel handbag.

– the birthday –

I’m honestly not too big on birthdays, weirdly because I was very blessed with lovely, caring friends that used to always give me a surprise on my birth anniversary …in which then cultivates my abnormally high expectations during this ‘special’ day. The first few years since this whole ‘surprise’ thing got popular, the surprises were so lovely. But as we grow up, I think it died down a bit and we stopped caring too much about it and the level of loveliness declines. Honestly I am going on a tangent here, but this is why I didn’t expect and didn’t want to do anything big for my birthday. Jeez that was a really long explanation. I invited my closest girlfriends (and boyfriend (singular)) to go out for dinner, so I basically spent the day with the boyfriend.

We started the day off going to ASDA (very special indeed), which led me on to wanting a KFC. Because every girl deserves a freaking KFC on their birthday ok??!! And I randomly wanted to go to London Zoo. Wow that all sounds weirder than I expected. I promise you I’m not that weird. But then again I always break my promises.

ANYWAY.

We didn’t end up going to the Zoo, in which reason I literally cannot remember because it has been half a year. So Phil just gave me my birthday present(s).

He always spoils me in this aspect and gave me not one, not two, but three items for my birthday! He gave me an Olive bomber jacket and a Mint striped shirt from H&M, but then he also gave me my favourite ever perfume, Giorgio Armani’s Si.

For the celebration, we went to a Korean BBQ restaurant near Goodge Street. My friends were late, as always, but when they came in, they sang, brought balloons, flowers, gifts and cupcakes – all of which I did not expect at all!

Overall, I had a reaaally great time. I think partly because I set my expectations really low.

I’m gonna let you in on a little blogger secret – we like to wear outfits twice because we didn’t have the time or thought to shoot the outfit. Or maybe that’s just me.

I bought this long-line leather jacket during early autumn and I was absolutely in love with it. I’ve been looking for one like it for aaages but couldn’t find any. I love how a long outerwear looks with a high-waisted bottoms. Well, who am I kidding, all my bottoms are high-waisted. But I especially like it ok!

While wearing such a cool and badass outfit (leather jacket and all!), I thought why not bust out my Miu Miu ballet flats ripoff from Zara and add another layer of coolness to an already cool outfit? (Ok I promise that was the last time I’m saying cool. Oops)

I know what you’re thinking though. You live in England. Still in the depths of winter. How the hell are you wearing that paper-thin leather jacket? Well… reader. This is my secret weapon:

Every time I want to wear a jacket that’s too thin during Winter, I just tuck in my Uniqlo ULD underneath. It’s so easy because it’s so thin, but probably one of the warmest jackets I have. This is a total must-have for all you fashionistas out there who still want to look stylish during the Winter months.

I have to admit… This one is a bit of an old outfit. By old, I mean… Two weeks old. Last week, my best friend, Hanie, came to visit me for a week. Hence why I did not post anything. Just when I had a great outfit, it was raining. Helloooo spring.

img_1102

Phil and I (Phil again? What’s new right) went to Tate Modern because sometimes we just feel like being cultured and artsy, ya know? Of course I wanted to dress for the occasion and came up with this pyjama-like concoction of an outfit. I wanted to dress down the otherwise formal-ish outfit with a jumper, and thought a matching colour would be more interesting. To be honest I want to wear this jumper forever because it’s so comfy!

susJust to give you a head’s up – April might be the busiest month in the history of my bachelor’s degree. I have only one month left to literally conduct my non-existent focus group and finish my dissertation, and a dozen other assignments, while also applying for postgraduate degrees. So I figured this would be the perfect opportunity to post outfit pictures I took last year when my mum and I went to travel England a bit.

Spring? What Spring?

img_0879_edit

As I upload these pictures for this post, I’ve just realised how accurate this outfit is as a representation of the weather in London these past few days – a little bit of spring, a little bit of flowers blooming, but still overall really dark and cold. I mean, we all get a bit too excited when we see the sun, don’t we? In reality, it’s still cold as hell.

img_0870_edit

Now… I have to admit. I am in a bit of a style rut. I am basically bored of all the clothes I have in my wardrobe. I only wear a handful of things, and trust me when I say I have an absolute shitload of clothes. The top that I’m wearing here is an old one, and this is my attempt in trying to make use of my wardrobe and not just wear the same polo neck jumper every single day. Can’t help it though. It’s really freaking cold in London! And since I come from a tropical country, my clothes are mostly really thin.

bootsimg_0879-copy

My hair is also getting quite long. Which is why on that day, I was actually going to Blue Tit in Dalston to chop it even shorter! I am still not too sure how I feel about the cut. I mean, I think it’s actually exactly what I wanted, but I’m questioning whether the length/style is suitable for me. It might be a little too short to suit me. Sorry for being a little tease and not actually posting a picture of it here. I guess you’ll have to stay tuned til next week’s post to see it!

P.S. I hope you will excuse my photographer’s skill in …photography. Lol. He’s working on it 😉

Unwinter-like Winter + Update

Converse shoes | Urban Outfitters bag

Oh God, here I go again. Haven’t posted in ages. To be completely honest with you I was in constant debate whether to move my blog to Blogger or not. I just feel a bit more comfortable there and feel like I can gain more readers somehow. I thought it was easier here in WordPress but it’s still much more passive than I thought.

And yes, I did cut my hair short! I finally took the plunge and decided to go to Hershesons and just get a(n unbelievably expensive) haircut (I am from Indonesia so haircuts in the UK seem freaking costly to me). Leaving the salon, I was very happy with my hair, but after a few days I just wasn’t sure about how it looks when I style it myself. I did try and curl it earlier today and I love the way it looks! Though the front bits are a bit too long :\

GOING BACK TO THE ACTUAL OUTFIT POST…
I wore my favourite &Other Stories bomber jacket which I am so very glad I got in the sales a few months ago. It’s honestly sooo warm. When everyone else is freezing their arses off, I was perfectly fine in that jacket. Definitely get your hands on it!

I like to mix textures to create different ‘vibes’ with my outfits. By pairing it with a knitted jumper, I think it just tones the disco-ness of it and makes it look more laid-back. Also wore my cool new Converse that my boyfriend got me for Christmas to add a bit of colour to my otherwise black outfit.

Spring Lookbook

The initial plan was to upload this early May, when Spring has just sprung and the weather is actually a bit colder (hence the slightly warmer clothes). It’s really quite hard to get people to film me ((un)fortunately my friends are hermit crabs and it’s so freaking hard to get them out of their HOME) so that’s why there is a one-month delay.

Anyway, in this lookbook, I featured four outfits, hopefully to inspire you on what to wear for what’s left of spring. I personally think spring is quite an awkward season, but it is my favourite. I feel like I always don’t know what to wear (well this happens no matter what season lol) because in the afternoon it’s kinda hot and in the evening it’s freezing. So it’s too hot to wear a jacket in the afternoon, but if you plan to be outside for the whole day, well, you’re kinda doomed without an outerwear. One thing all the outfits in this lookbook have in common are the lightweight outerwear and bottoms. I think they are key to keep yourself looking stylish but also fit for the weather.

I hope you enjoy this lookbook and let me know what you think down in the comments, and I’ll see you in my next one! 😉
